Marriage Registration — Special Registry

Please note that from 1 January 2022 onward, registry acts for events (births, marriages, deaths) that took place abroad and concern Greek citizens, as well as amendments and corrections to such acts, are recorded by staffed Greek Consulates directly into the “Citizen Registry” information system UNLESS you fall into one of the exceptions listed below:

• A. Recording of amendments to registry entries for which recognition of a foreign judicial title is required.
• B. Recording of events that were not timely declared to the competent consulate where they occurred, and where the interested parties now reside permanently in Greece or in a different country than where the event occurred. Residence in Greece is proven by issuing and submitting a permanent residence certificate under Article 279 of Law 3463/2006, as applicable. Residence in another country is proven by submitting a certificate from the relevant Greek Diplomatic or Consular Authority or other competent local authority, officially translated into Greek.
• C. Recording of events whose declaration would require travel of more than five hundred (500) kilometres for the interested parties to reach the competent consulate, or when no consulate exists in the area.
• D. Corrections of registry acts or certificates of registry events by virtue of a final judicial decision, as provided in Article 782 of the Civil Procedure Code.
• E. Recording of registry events when consular authorities are unable to draft registry acts due to suspension of operations for reasons of force majeure (e.g. health crisis, war, interruption of diplomatic relations).
• G. Registry events that occur within the jurisdiction of honorary (unpaid) consulates are recorded either at the nearest staffed consulate or directly at the Special Registry, or at the Special Registry after transmission by the honorary consulate of translated copies of the required certificates from the local authority.
